Marshmallow

Marshmallow is a picture book about a cat and a rabbit who end up as companions in an unexpected way. Oliver, a tabby who is accustomed to being the center of attention, is not pleased when a young rabbit named Marshmallow moves into his home. His initial coolness toward the newcomer slowly gives way as the little rabbit wins him over.

The book is presented as a true account of how the two animals became friends. Clare Turlay Newberry, who loved both cats and drawing, brought those passions together in this book, and her illustrations give the household and its animals a warm, lively presence. The book earned a Caldecott Honor in 1943.

Newberry also wrote and illustrated other books about cats and animals, including Mittens and April's Kittens, so readers who enjoy Marshmallow may want to explore those as well.
