Mattie

Born outside marriage and without much money, Mattie finds work as a live-in companion to the daughter of a physician. Soon she is helping the doctor tend to his patients, and that experience pushes her toward a path few women of her circumstances could imagine: medical school. The story follows her climb from the margins of society to a career as a doctor serving the rural families who work the open prairie.
