Drawing on more than five decades of writing, Peter C. Newman collects the pieces he considers among his strongest, all focused on Canadians who defied convention on a very large stage. The business figures include Conrad Black, Garth Drabinsky, Robert Campeau, Peter Nygard and the Eaton boys, while the historical story of Louis Riel also appears.

Politics receives equal attention. Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell, René Lévesque, Bill Vander Zalm and Lucien Bouchard are all profiled, and a passage on John Diefenbaker is drawn from Newman's earlier book Renegade in Power.

Newman is a Canadian journalist who once edited Maclean's magazine. This volume is paired with its companion, Heroes, and together the two offer a wide cross-section of his career.
