McMillions
About This Book
McMillions expands on the HBO docuseries McMillion$ with new interviews and stories that did not fit into the series. In March 2001, federal prosecutor Mark Devereaux cold-called Rob Holm, head of security for McDonald's Corporation, and asked him and several senior executives to come to the FBI office in Jacksonville, Florida. He gave no explanation and told them to keep the destination secret. When they arrived, Devereaux watched their body language for tells, since at that point everyone in the room was a potential suspect. In a plain conference room inside the heavily secured FBI building, he described a conspiracy reaching into the McDonald's Monopoly game. Between 1989 and 2001, almost every high-value prize had gone to a winner who was not legitimate. The executives were left to ask how that could happen and who was behind it. A rookie FBI agent and a clever undercover operation eventually led investigators to one man who had built a nearly foolproof nationwide fraud. The book traces the crime itself, the web of lies that held it together and the persistent work of the agents who took it apart. Along the way there are families torn apart, betrayals, financial ruin and one suspicious car crash, with some lighter moments from the antics of the agents and their collaborators. At heart it is an account of the American dream going badly wrong.
