Mentoring While White
About This Book
Mentoring While White examines how Black students at colleges and universities experience mentorship when their racialized and marginalized identities shape those relationships. Bettie Ray Butler, Abiola Farinde-Wu, and Melissa Winchell brought together a diverse group of leading and emerging scholars to argue for what white faculty should do differently. Their central claim is that mentoring can be reimagined to sustain Black students' lives through deliberate effort, reciprocal love, and transformative practice. Rather than stopping at critique, the volume is oriented toward solutions. It offers direct guidance, practical strategies, and key insights for putting culturally responsive mentoring into action, with the aim of strengthening cross-racial mentor and mentee relationships and improving what Black students achieve after they leave school. The recommendations are specific enough to inform everyday mentoring conversations. Attention is given to Black women, Black men, and queer undergraduate and graduate students. The contributors present innovative mentoring models that draw on critical media studies and antiracist frameworks. The book is intended for anyone who already mentors Black college and university students or hopes to begin.
