About this book
Mercury opens in 1990, when seventeen-year-old Marley West arrives in Mercury, Pennsylvania, a blue-collar river valley town. She has always been a loner and is looking for a place at someone's table and a family of her own. The first thing she sees on arrival is three men standing on a rooftop, their silhouettes blocking out the sun.
The Joseph brothers soon become her whole world. Marley ends up the young wife of one brother, the one who got away for another, and a kind of adopted mother to all of them. Their own mother is fading away, and their roofing business is failing under the weight of their overbearing father's inflated ego, so Marley steps in to look after these unruly men.
Years later, a strange discovery in the church attic brings old wounds back to the surface, and the family's survival is suddenly at stake. With Marley as their guide, the Joseph brothers must decide whether they can save the family they have always known or build something stronger in its place.
The novel is by Amy Jo Burns, author of Shiner.
