About this book
This hands-on guide shows Java and Spring Boot developers how to design a set of microservices from scratch, then package and run them in production-style environments. No earlier experience with microservice architecture is needed, but readers should already be comfortable building applications with Java and Spring Boot. The book also addresses the difficulties that appear when a microservice landscape grows large, and it explains how to combine Spring Cloud, Kubernetes, and Istio so they work well together.
The author begins with a few small services that cooperate with one another, then extends them with persistence, resilience, reactive programming, and API documentation written in OpenAPI. Next come the standard patterns that supply key features. Netflix Eureka handles service discovery, and Spring Cloud Gateway serves as an edge server that shields internal services. A revised security chapter covers OAuth 2.1 and uses the Spring Authorization Server, a recently released project from the Spring team.
Deployment is covered through Docker, Kubernetes, and Istio, with an introduction to Helm 3 for packaging and releasing services. The text also explains how to compile Spring-based microservices to native code and how to set up local Kubernetes clusters and install Istio. Operations topics include centralized log management with the Elasticsearch, Fluentd, and Kibana (EFK) stack and monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana. Readers will also learn to write automated tests with JUnit, Testcontainers, Gradle, and bash. The examples run on Mac and on Windows through WSL2.
The material reflects the latest releases of Spring, Java, Kubernetes, and Istio. By the end, readers should be able to build reactive microservices, make them resilient and scalable, protect public APIs with OAuth 2.1, OIDC, and Spring Security, and use Istio for security, observability, and traffic management.
