Middle Generation
About This Book
The novel spans the decades of American history between the Revolution and emancipation, a formative era in which a young republic tried to champion liberty before a Europe that doubted freedom could take hold at all, least of all in a country where it came wrapped in the trappings of slavery. M. B. Zucker guides readers through this period with John Quincy Adams, the son of one president and, in his convictions, a follower of George Washington. Adams links the founding generation to Abraham Lincoln, and most historians rank him among the finest secretaries of state the country has had. Seen through his eyes, the reader follows a largely forgotten clash with the European powers over the independence of South American nations, a confrontation that foreshadowed the Monroe Doctrine. The book is built on sharp, pointed dialogue and draws closely on Adams's 51-volume diary. It blends political intrigue with a character study of a famously reserved man, and it features the leading figures of the Era of Good Feelings, including James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay. It follows the author's earlier novel, The Eisenhower Chronicles.
