Milton's Creation

Written as a guide for students approaching Milton's epic, this study offers a plain, direct route into Paradise Lost. Rather than arguing for one reading over another, the author sets out to clarify what Milton means at the core of the poem, explaining the central substance of the work he calls his great argument with precision. The book, first published in 1971, also places Milton's poem alongside Joyce's Ulysses, treating both as major epics of universal scope and bringing a post-Joycean outlook to its account of Milton's creation.
