Mirror Girls
About This Book
Two sisters who were separated as babies begin their lives on opposite sides of the color line. Their parents were murdered by a mob for loving each other across racial lines, and the twins were split up in secret. Years later, the Civil Rights Movement is gathering force. Charlie is a young Black activist working in Harlem. Magnolia has been raised as white and is set to inherit a cotton plantation in rural Georgia, with no idea of her true ancestry. In a town where the past of slaveholding still lingers, keeping a secret like hers is nearly impossible. Once Magnolia discovers who she really is, her reflection vanishes from every mirror, a clear sign of a dreadful curse. In Harlem, Charlie's beloved grandmother becomes seriously ill. Her last request is to be laid to rest in Georgia, where she was born. Charlie does not know that her grandmother also hopes to see the granddaughter she lost long ago, Magnolia Heathwood, one final time. Charlie makes the journey south into the Deep South, a place she has dreaded, where Jim Crow segregation is enforced. The sisters finally meet as teenagers in Eureka, Georgia, a town so thick with hauntings that spirits remain there long after their lives ended, and danger can hide in any reflective surface. The two are very different people, yet they must depend on one another to lay the town's old ghosts to rest, break the deadly curse on the mirrors, and understand what it means to be sisters in a land divided by race.
