Model Home
About This Book
Model Home is a haunted-house novel by Rivers Solomon. The Maxwell siblings, Ezri, Eve and Emanuelle, have long kept their distance from the gated, entirely white suburb outside Dallas where they grew up. Their family was the only Black household there. The neighbors were pleasant enough, but the house soon filled with uncanny, frightening events that nobody could account for. Perhaps it was a cosmic test, or a demonic initiation into upper-middle-class life. Whatever the cause, the family, guided by their strong-willed mother, refused to leave. As adults, the siblings finally got away and left their parents alone in the house. When their parents die, Ezri must travel back to Texas with her sisters to confront the family's past and present and to learn what happened while they were gone. The circumstances do not point to a natural death, which leaves open whether something supernatural was at work. Solomon reverses the conventions of the haunted-house story to examine the lasting damage of segregation and racism in the suburban American South. The result is a tale of buried histories brought to light and a queer family struggling to survive, mourn, and heal under the pressures of contemporary American life.
