About this book
The narrator is a restless writer who once dealt drugs, and he is going through a shift in both his personal life and his work. Tired of Paris and hoping for a creative breakthrough, he sets out to find a fresh way of writing. His travels take him first to Barcelona and then to the Hotel Cervantes in Montevideo, Uruguay, a place that seems to have inspired both Julio Cortázar and Adolfo Bioy Casares. Montevideo is not his last stop, since Bogotá, Reykjavík, New York and St. Gallen in Switzerland lie ahead, and the reader is left wondering where all this leads.
Behind the journey is a question the novel keeps returning to: can what the imagination creates be captured on the page accurately and faithfully, or is writing doomed to offer only a thin, distorted copy of reality? The book examines what fiction is for and pushes that inquiry further.
The form shifts constantly. Slapstick comedy sits beside sharp literary criticism, travel writing gives way to abstract philosophical speculation, and the whole structure folds into a maze of reflections and deceptions. Born in Barcelona, Vila-Matas is a Spanish author known for metafiction that questions its own construction.
