Mr. Block
About This Book
Long before superhero comics took hold, cartoonist Ernest Riebe created Mr. Block, a clumsy character who adores his employer and wants nothing to do with unions. Riebe drew him over a century ago as a stand-in for ordinary workers who trusted the capitalist system that was exploiting them, and the strip works as sharp satire of that trust. Riebe was a committed labour activist and a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. This anthology brings together his cartoons and his writings, offering a wide view of radical twentieth-century art. It is aimed at comics readers, historians, and labour activists alike. With income inequality rising and the collective strength of working people being weakened, the blunders and misguided beliefs of Mr. Block still speak to present-day readers. The book closes with the idea that rebuilding a new world from the wreckage of the old takes many tools, and that humour is one of the most useful.
