Musical Instruments

Following the evolution of instruments family by family, this survey moves from the strings and organs to the woodwinds, brass, reeds and percussion. It gives equal attention to mechanical instruments and to the innovations that appeared in the twentieth century.

Beyond tracing where each type of instrument came from, the book looks at the purposes it served and the musical settings in which it was played, so readers see how instruments shaped the music made with them.
