Nesting Dolls
About This Book
Anyiaka admires her Gullah Geechee relatives and hopes to take after them. She wants her older sister Sorie's beauty, her mother's gift for listening closely, and her grandmother's talent as an artist. During a visit to her grandparents' home, though, she feels like the one who doesn't fit. Nothing she attempts seems to go right, and a stop in Grandma's art studio makes the gap between her and the rest of the family feel even wider. There she finds her grandmother's artwork, a set of nesting dolls, which shows her that appearances don't reveal everything. Each member of the family may look distinct, but they share a beauty and inner strength that have been growing in each of them for generations. As a picture book, the story is aimed at young children and uses its illustrations to carry its message about family, identity and self-acceptance.
