Never Panic Early
About This Book
Fred Haise is one of 24 men who have flown to the moon, and this memoir traces the path that took him there. He served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 13, a mission that was going smoothly until an oxygen tank failed three days after launch. The book walks through that ordeal from the inside, from the crew's first report to mission control to the effort that followed on the ground and in the spacecraft.
The story also covers the rest of Haise's life and career. He recalls his years as a military fighter pilot and his two decades at NASA as an Apollo astronaut. Had Apollo 13 succeeded, he would have been the sixth man to walk on the moon, and the book considers that lost opportunity alongside the highs and lows of his working life.
Haise is candid about the frightening and difficult moments he faced. One chapter describes a crash that occurred while he was delivering a World War II-era aircraft for an air show. He suffered second and third-degree burns over about 65 percent of his body and spent ten days in critical condition before he recovered.
The memoir shows what it was like to work at NASA during its peak years and how Haise learned to handle unexpected situations. It is illustrated with black-and-white photographs.
