About this book
Close to three million Jews living in Poland were killed during the Holocaust, a loss that erased nearly 98 percent of a Jewish community that had taken root there over many generations. This book traces how those Jews resisted, endured, and died, and it describes these events without softening them. The account rests on careful research conducted throughout Poland.
Its central conclusion is that a considerable number of Polish villagers and townspeople helped the Germans track down Jews and carry out their killings.
The Polish edition appeared in 2018 and was met with a fierce reaction, including lawsuits and protests from Holocaust deniers and from people who argued that the research was fabricated and insulted the Polish nation.
This English edition, the first in that language, was translated and published with Yad Vashem. It lays out the key facts, main findings, and documentary evidence of Polish participation in the genocide of Jews.
