Not Cool
About This Book
Greg Gutfeld argues that a single force sits behind a great many bad choices, both small and catastrophic: the urge to be cool. In Not Cool, he treats that urge as a kind of rot that spreads through politics, fashion, food, schools, newsrooms, entertainment and government, and he blames the people who set the tone for it, whom he calls the cool, for steering the rest of us. His case is that the cool keep their grip through social fear. Disagree with them and nobody will like you, skip what they endorse and you will miss out, ignore their advice and you will end up alone. Gutfeld has little patience for any of it. He accuses them of cozying up to terrorists, sneering at the military, looking down on employers and handing out verdicts on anyone who refuses to go along. In his telling, pop culture, from what we wear and eat to what we smoke and who we sleep with, is shaped and manipulated by this crowd. The book is a comic polemic, and it also offers a remedy. Gutfeld sets out a plan for taking back what he sees as the genuine American version of cool: starting businesses, defending freedom at home and abroad, owning your actions, and letting other people live as they please. He wrote it as a counterattack on what he considers a culture of phonies, elitists and creeps, and as a book to keep close at hand. Gutfeld is also the author of The Joy of Hate.
