Omniconomics
About This Book
Niko Roorda argues that human societies can be made sustainable at their core and woven into the natural world, but only if economics itself is rebuilt. He contends that the flawed assumptions behind current economic thinking directly feed many of the environmental and social dangers the world now faces. In response, he proposes omniconomics, a new interdisciplinary framework that joins the natural and social sciences together. According to Roorda, this approach offers better ways to tackle urgent problems such as climate change, deforestation, environmental and economic inequality, dehumanization and the weakening of social cohesion. The book is meant to spark debate among the public, scientists and policymakers about what present-day economics does, whether it deserves more than the status of a protoscience, and what that means for national and international policy. It also challenges readers to look past short- and medium-to-long-term fixes such as the Sustainable Development Goals and circular economy schemes. Omniconomics, in the author's framing, begins where Doughnut economics leaves off. Roorda also calls on universities to pursue interdisciplinary research toward an omniconomic science that would replace economics and grow into a mature discipline. Students, graduates, politicians, social leaders and anyone concerned about current problems and the future are encouraged to think independently and unconventionally. The book is intended for students and scholars of sustainable development, sustainability economics and related policy, as well as practitioners working in adjacent fields.
