Omnipotent
About This Book
Before retiring, Bill Dorsch worked as a homicide detective in Chicago. Over those years he learned to expect that people accused of murder would often choose to deceive investigators. Being lied to frustrated him, yet his duty was to uncover what had really happened, wherever the evidence led. Collecting proof and witness testimony formed the core of that work, all of it aimed at the day the case would be presented in court. For the families of murder victims, that day was often the only path to answers and some measure of peace. Dorsch had a personal connection to John Wayne Gacy, whom he describes as a monstrous figure living openly among the community. He had even shared a meal in Gacy's home, the same house where many of the victims' remains were later found. After Gacy's arrest, Dorsch responded to law enforcement appeals for tips about other possible victims and burial sites, but his help was unwelcome. He was told that officials did not want any more bodies. Chicago moved quickly to bring the case to trial and secure a conviction, while residents and the victims' relatives had trusted that investigators would be thorough. According to Dorsch, the investigation effectively ended once Gacy was in custody. Authorities, he argues, buried the truth along with the killer and showed little regard for the families of both known and unknown victims. He initially felt betrayed and isolated, but the stories and pleas for help from some of the victims' families moved him to launch his own inquiry. More than twenty years later, Dorsch now shares what he has uncovered. The book includes information that should have come to light in the weeks and months after the arrest. He contends that it never did because law enforcement and certain government figures chose to protect their own interests rather than give the families the answers they sought.
