Sergeant Frank Petrovic has close to three decades of police work behind him and a reputation as a capable investigator. Only months before he must retire under the department's mandatory age rule, he is paired with Sergeant Maria de Leon, the lone detective in the Homicide Unit who has no partner. Once the two join forces, events take turns nobody anticipated.

For several years, a serial killer has been murdering women, and the Homicide Unit has already examined each of those cases thoroughly. Frank and Maria are responsible for keeping the files open, chasing any new leads, and staying up to date on every crime. Everyone in the unit is certain the killer will strike again, yet few believe the pair can make any headway.

Frank regards the assignment as make-work until his retirement, while Maria suspects she was placed on the team as a token minority whose opinions carry no weight. Both have misjudged Frank, whose stubborn determination runs deeper than anyone assumed, and few have noticed how badly Maria wants to prove she deserves her place. Written with the feel of a true crime drama, the novel is built to hold the reader's attention.
