About this book
John Duns Scotus (1265-1308) was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1993. He is regarded as one of the most original and influential thinkers of the Middle Ages, active as both a philosopher and a theologian. This book takes a sympathetic look at a broad range of his thought.
The discussion covers how Scotus understood the relationship between faith and reason, and his account of individuation through haecceity, or thisness. It also examines his theory of the univocity of the concept of being, and his emphasis on God's freedom together with the consequences he drew from it for moral theory.
The author also takes up Scotus's defense of Mary's Immaculate Conception and his teaching on the primacy of Christ.
