About this book
Roughly half a million people travelled from the Caribbean to Britain between the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948 and the passing of the 1971 Immigration Act. Since the 2018 Windrush Scandal, the experiences of this wave of migrants, known as the Windrush Generation, have become much more widely recognised. This book asks whether that familiar account is complete.
Through biographical essays, poems and articles, the book turns to Indian and Chinese Caribbean migrants, a smaller group within that larger community. Many of them were the descendants of indentured labourers, and they were largely absent from the familiar story of the Windrush years. The pieces explore the variety of these people's lives and cultural backgrounds.
The book also examines the largely forgotten history of the indenture system in the British Caribbean. It adds a distinctive perspective to the existing scholarship on migration and the British Empire.
