About this book
This volume gathers papers and documents that trace how ancient history developed as an academic field in the Antipodes. Its main thread is the approach E. A. Judge developed: studying classical and biblical texts together within a single discipline, with close attention to documentary evidence.
The twenty chapters look at how Antipodean scholarship relates to British scholarship and at the lives and legacies of the scholars who worked on the ancient world in the region. Other chapters examine the aims and assumptions behind ancient history teaching in schools and universities, with particular focus on New South Wales and Macquarie University, and the interplay between biblical and classical studies. The closing themes consider what history is for in contemporary Australia.
Most of the pieces were written by Judge across his career. Each now appears with a new introduction that places it within the history of the discipline and explains its relevance to his own practice.
