Partition Project
About This Book
Mahnoor is a Pakistani American girl in Houston whose life is about to be upended. Her grandmother, Dadi, is arriving from Pakistan to live with the family, and Maha is sure it will disrupt everything. She has no time to act as Dadi's unofficial babysitter. Her journalism teacher has just assigned a documentary film project, which sounds to Maha more like storytelling than the real journalism she cares about. As Dadi settles into her new city and Maha searches for a subject, the two begin to talk. Dadi describes her childhood in northern India and the Partition of India and Pakistan, which forced her from her home to the newly created Pakistan. The more Dadi shares, the more her story begins to feel like the breaking news Maha loves. Before long, Maha realizes she has found her documentary subject. This middle grade novel by Saadia Faruqi follows the bond that grows between granddaughter and grandmother as Maha helps Dadi tell her story.
