Passing Time
About This Book
Between 1969 and 1974, W. D. Ehrhart drifted through a period he later saw as largely wasted time. His return to ordinary life took shape when, at 21, he enrolled as a freshman at Swarthmore College, having already served in Vietnam. At first, Ehrhart's goal was to bury his wartime past. Gradually, though, he came to understand what had happened to him over there and why it had happened. Flashbacks to the war itself are woven throughout the narrative. At its core, the book follows a political and personal awakening. As the conflict dragged on, Ehrhart saw that the United States had gone into the war through deception, and that officials kept repeating false claims about how it was being fought. Those discoveries forced him to re-examine his feelings about his government, his country, and himself. Readers travel with him from naivete through a growing awareness and a period of bitter withdrawal, and eventually reach a measure of peace.
