The survival of humankind is uncertain. An alien species called the Jegg has invaded Earth and destroyed half of the Terran Confederation. Beneath the Sahara Desert, in a concealed installation, a group of researchers is organizing a counterattack.

Their plan centers on a starship fitted with folding-space technology, which would carry them to the far side of the galaxy. There they hope to locate an enigmatic power source that could turn the struggle against the Jegg. What the crew finds on that distant world will catch every one of them off guard.
