About this book
Penguins hold a special place in the public imagination, and their comical, expressive movements on land make it easy to read human moods and quirks into them. Yet most of their lives unfold out of sight, beneath the ocean's surface, and their private world is far more intricate and puzzling than it appears. This revised second edition is a photographic guide to these birds that also explains the recent research scientists are using to understand them.
The book presents more than 400 photographs covering all 18 penguin species. Its coverage includes the shy and the night-active kinds, which are seldom photographed and often overlooked. The text has been updated with newer scientific findings, and this edition adds a number of new images.
Tui De Roy, Mark Jones and Julie Cornthwaite wrote the book, and it is the largest project the three have undertaken together. Over more than twenty years they travelled across the Southern Hemisphere to nearly every place penguins live, from the lava shores of the Galápagos, warmed by the sun, to remote subantarctic islands and around the Antarctic continent, where emperor penguins breed on sea ice.
The book is written for bird enthusiasts and armchair naturalists alike. Alongside its photographs, it discusses penguin conservation, profiles each species, shares interesting facts about penguins, and offers guidance on where to observe them in the wild.
