People
About This Book
This debut poetry collection turns its attention to people, in all their strangeness and charm. The poems consider how each person relates to themselves, to others, and to the places they inhabit. Family, friendship, love, belonging and acceptance recur as central concerns, and the book as a whole honours the individuality of each person and the bonds that connect them. Partway through, the poet describes a late diagnosis of ADHD, and one strand of the collection examines that experience. Readers are drawn into a mind that keeps churning and never settles. The poet's thinking produces elaborate patterns and scraps of verse scattered across countless notebooks. Several poems appear in the author's own handwriting, embellished to resemble the decorated pages of those notebooks. These pages offer a close look at the creative side of neurodivergence.
