About this book
Persons in Relation is the second volume of John Macmurray's Gifford Lectures, published under the general title The Form of the Personal. Where the earlier volume, The Self as Agent, argued that philosophy should begin from doing rather than from thinking, this book keeps that practical starting point. Macmurray's aim is to show that personal life takes its shape from the mutual bond between people. On this view, the basic unit of human existence is not a solitary self but a pair, the you and the I, held together in relationship.
