Philosophical profiles

Ten essays by Richard J. Bernstein make up this collection. Each one takes a single thinker, or a small group of them, as its subject, and each addresses figures who shaped recent philosophical debate. The philosophers examined include Hannah Arendt, John Dewey, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jürgen Habermas, G.W.F. Hegel, Alasdair MacIntyre, Herbert Marcuse and Richard Rorty.

Because every essay stands on its own around one figure, readers can move between the chapters or go straight to the thinker they want to understand. Together the pieces give a picture of several major voices in modern philosophy.
