Piñata

Carmen Sanchez has returned to her native Mexico to oversee the conversion of an ancient cathedral into a boutique hotel. Her teenage daughters, Izel and Luna, are spending the summer with her, and their afternoons are largely unsupervised in a city that feels foreign to them. The locals treat the Sanchez women as outsiders, and Carmen's contractors openly defy her and sabotage the work.

When an accident at the construction site nearly injures Luna, Carmen decides she has had enough and takes her daughters home to New York. But Luna begins to act strangely there, and only Izel notices the unsettling changes in her younger sister.

This possession story by author and artist Leopoldo Gout explores how the consequences of the past can come back to haunt the living. The Sanchez family may already be too late to escape whatever has been awakened.
