Platformland
About This Book
Most public sector digitization programmes aim to deliver the same services as before, only more cheaply. This book argues that the result has often been new administrative burdens rather than relief from bureaucracy. The public are treated as consumers, which misses what makes public services public, and digital is too often an afterthought rather than a core part of how a modern state operates. Platformland sets out a different path. It describes the kinds of interaction people should expect from the next generation of public services, the digital platforms and infrastructure those services will run on, and the public sector design values needed to make them real. The book includes thirty illustrated design patterns, ten strategic interventions, and examples from around the world of patterns emerging in digital government. It also draws on foundational ideas from computer science, design and public policy to show that the challenges of the digital state are neither new nor unprecedented. The aim is to help more policy professionals think like technologists and designers, and more technologists and designers think about public policy.
