About this book
Ethan Block is a college graduate carrying six figures of debt, and he has come to San Francisco because it seems like the place where things happen. His job at DateDate, a fast-growing dating app, is nothing like what he pictured. He spends his days working through queues of flagged photos, overworked and stressed, rather than improving the world. The narrator also says that his nondisclosure agreement binds him for life, so he should not be telling this story at all, but he feels he has to.
After a breakup, Ethan gives in to curiosity and looks up the soulmate the app's algorithm has matched him with. He overrides the system and opens her profile. Then he vanishes. One moment he is at his desk in an office with no windows, and the next he is gasping for breath in an endless field of grass. When he lands back at DateDate headquarters, he assumes a coding glitch was to blame.
No one will believe him without proof, so Ethan goes looking for evidence. His search takes him through shabby startup think tanks and on to the dominant tech conglomerate of Silicon Valley, and it becomes clear that DateDate is hiding far more than it shows. As the stakes climb and an entire other world is threatened, Ethan has to decide who and what he believes in.
