About this book
Sokol proposes a new use for the art journal: keeping up a correspondence with creative people who live far away. Over the course of a year, readers draw, doodle, collage, and write on postcards, mailing each one to a friend. Art journaling has grown steadily over the past decade among scrapbookers, planners, and mixed media artists, and this book turns that practice toward letter writing.
The book is meant for artists at any stage, from complete beginners to experienced makers of any age. It is organized as 52 weekly prompts. Each one suggests a subject, a dry media technique, and the tools to use. Some prompts ask readers to step outside, look around, and capture what they see in a drawing, doodle, or collage. Others ask them to map where they are now or where they hope to be.
The pages are perforated so they can be torn out, worked on, and posted to someone else.
The author earned a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She began her career editing newspapers, then moved into art directing magazines, including America West Airlines Magazine. A feature she art directed was included in Print Magazine's 2002 Regional Design Annual. For a decade she designed books for U.S. publishers including Sterling Publishing, Gibbs Smith, North Light, Quarry, and The Countryman Press. She now writes, illustrates, and makes art in her studio in Tempe, Arizona, where she works alongside her dog, Lola.
