Now in a fresh edition, this long-running text on the professional responsibilities of lawyers has a new co-author and a retitled cover that signals its two defining features. Kaufman and Wilkins rebuilt the book from the ground up, adding a large number of new problems, new explanatory text, and new excerpted materials. The problem-based approach that made earlier editions popular remains at its core.

Throughout the book, the authors have introduced a broader perspective on the subject. A new section draws on recent empirical research about lawyers and asks how major changes in the economy, in demographics, and in legal institutions may influence the norms of legal practice and the working lives of lawyers in the twenty-first century.
