Prophets
About This Book
Few figures from the ancient world still attract attention in synagogues, churches and secular discussion alike, and this introductory text for students approaches the Israelite prophets from several directions. It traces how prophecy emerged in ancient Israel, considers whether comparable phenomena existed elsewhere in the ancient Near East, and examines the messages of individual prophets. It also explores how the prophetic writings were composed and edited over time, introduces the main questions scholars debate today, and presents a range of modern approaches to reading the prophets' messages. The opening part sets the context. It places prophets and prophecy within their historical and cultural setting, then looks at how prophecy arose, what the prophet's role involved, the central themes that run through the tradition, and what eventually became of prophecy as a practice. The second part profiles the prophets active in the eighth century, during the exile, and in the postexilic period. Each prophetic book is examined, and the chapters show where these writings fit within the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament. Later chapters address how the texts can be interpreted today, comparing Jewish and Christian readings, the question of prophecy and prediction, and the secular legacy of Israelite prophecy. Numerous images, charts and maps appear throughout to help students follow the material.
