About this book
Jack Walker opens his memoir by asking whether his paranoia is justified, then concludes that his life's purpose draws enemies, and that his bedtime worries keep returning to a gunman bent on revenge. He begins life as a child with very limited sight, able to read only through a strong magnifying glass.
At the Leeds School for the Blind, Jack commits himself to stopping the bullying of defenseless children. With a group of seven friends, he succeeds. His journey carries him from a frightened, mocked blind teenager to the head of a seemingly unbeatable crew he calls the Magnificent Seven, or the Protectors. Along the way he discovers unusual abilities that involve mind over matter.
As a young man, Jack's romantic and sexual relationships lead to the birth of a son, Jacob, who means everything to him. The Protectors eventually take on a major task, which is revealed later in the book. Throughout, Jack shows great courage, relying on his powerful dog Merc, his loyal gang, and his special powers.
