Punk is now responsible for a training squadron of newly minted pilots, and the story follows them as they head toward trouble that seems to have been waiting for them. During a routine training flight, the F-14 Tomcat flown by the only woman in Punk's class begins rolling out of control and nearly collides with another aircraft in midair. Punk links the near-disaster to an earlier accident that killed one of his fellow trainers, and he begins to suspect that faulty parts were involved and that someone has tried to hide it. Once he speaks up about his suspicions, a much larger crisis pulls the squadron onto active duty. The drills are over, and the threat is America's next war.
