Quantum Hall Effect
About This Book
The book follows the quantum Hall effect from its discovery to its theoretical explanation, laying out the principles that underpin it. It opens with a historical survey that covers the original experiments and the physical systems in which the effect appears. From there, the text examines discrete symmetries (inversion, time reversal, particle-hole and chiral symmetry) and shows how the Hamiltonian transforms under each of them. Two one-dimensional models are then discussed: the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and a Kitaev chain with superconducting correlations. The later chapters take up the quantum Hall effect in graphene and the spin Hall effect, which may make graphene useful in spintronic devices. The book concludes with a brief review of the fractional quantum Hall effect. It is written for undergraduate and graduate students of physics, engineering and applied sciences who are studying condensed matter physics. Doctoral students and researchers in the field will also find it useful.
