About this book
Queer Art traces LGBTQ+ history through artworks and cultural landmarks. In the twentieth century, LGBTQ+ rights and recognition shifted dramatically across the western world, from the Stonewall uprising to the first pride parades and the reform of homosexuality laws. The years since have brought further challenges, celebrations, injustices and liberations for queer life, and art and culture have charted that journey throughout.
Artists working in every medium, including painting, performance and digital work, have recorded the moments that shaped the community, from the HIV/AIDS crisis and the rise of drag to marriage equality and the fight for trans liberation.
The selection was made by leading LGBTQ+ curator Gemma Rolls-Bentley. It mixes high-brow with low, gallery stalwarts with Instagram stars, and the racy with the fabulous. More than 170 works are arranged in thematic chapters on Queer Spaces, Queer Bodies and Queer Power.
The book is a celebration of queer life for art lovers and for anyone interested in the visual culture around queer identity.
