Queer Museum
About This Book
The Queer Museum looks at how museums and LGBTQ+ communities relate to one another, and how those relationships shape what queer museum practice means. The book considers what it means to queer a museum in Western contexts. It builds on, and pushes back against, existing writing on inclusive and activist museum work, and it examines how communities treated as Other are engaged and represented.
The author argues that an institution's view of queerness determines what kind of change, and how much, it will pursue. Governance structures, staff hierarchies, funding and ties to queer communities all affect how queering can happen. The analysis examines exhibitions and institutions critically and gives particular weight to the experiences of museum practitioners. It holds that practical changes that improve a museum's long-term relationships with marginalised communities are essential.
The final part turns to the museum's future, drawing on queer theories of utopia, futurity, failure and amateurism to complicate how the queer museum, its people and its objects are understood.
The book is written for students and academics in museum and heritage studies, art history and archival studies. It is also aimed at museum and arts sector practitioners who do this kind of work or want to engage with it.
