Rainforest Warrior

Chico Mendes spent his life working as a rubber tapper, collecting latex from trees in the Brazilian Amazon, and he became one of the earliest widely recognised environmental campaigners. He worked to keep the rainforest standing and to defend the rights of the other rubber tappers who made their homes among its trees. His activism made him a target, and he was murdered for it.

Anita Ganeri, a prize-winning author, tells his story, and Margaux Carpentier's bright illustrations bring the setting to life. Along the way, young readers see the wildlife and wonders of the Amazon and learn why rainforests around the world need protecting. The book is written to encourage children to speak up and take action for the natural world.

It also works well as classroom support for lessons on habitats, rainforests, biodiversity and the role of forests in tackling climate change.
