Rapture

Noah and Celeste Quilter meet through a newspaper-arranged blind date, fall in love, marry, and have a baby. Almost from the start, though, they are being watched. When they begin fighting for their future, the struggle ends up costing them their lives.

The play asks how anyone can be sure the stories they tell themselves are true in a world where reality may be whatever we choose to imagine. It also asks what happens when the only person you can fully trust is your partner. The questions are domestic as well as unsettling, down to whether anyone in the house ever remembers to take out the bins.

Rapture premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in June 2022, directed by Lucy Morrison. Early publicity used the title That Is Not Who I Am, credited to Dave Davidson, a pseudonym.

Lucy Kirkwood, the playwright, is also the author of The Children and Chimerica.
