About this book
This is the fourth volume in a series on the basics of Raspberry Pi OS administration. It builds on Volumes 1, 2 and 3 and offers a compendium of easy-to-use, essential administration knowledge for the novice user. Its particular focus is on ancillary topics that work with Raspberry Pi OS based on the upstream Debian Bookworm release and with the Raspberry Pi 5.
The guiding idea is that administering a modern Linux system such as Raspberry Pi OS means using systemd to make the Linux kernel work efficiently and effectively. The aim is to deliver three foundations of computer operation: concurrency, virtualization and secure persistence.
This volume gives full chapters, with many examples, to the Zettabyte File System (ZFS), the X Window System, the Wayland protocol, XWayland, the Wayfire window manager, XCB, Qt5 and GTK4 graphics, and the Emacs text editor. It also includes a basic introduction to important Raspberry Pi commands for newcomers.
The book is aimed at students and practitioners who want to get the most out of Raspberry Pi OS. It contains plenty of practical examples, projects and exercises, so it can also be used in a more formal learning setting to supplement and extend a basic knowledge of Linux.
