Mark Goddard has lost his sense of purpose. A brutal beating left him badly damaged, and since then he has stopped caring about much of anything, including the bull riding career that once defined him. Drinking feels like the easiest way to escape how empty he has become. Then a murder investigation brings a sheriff named Whitney York into his life, and for the first time in a long while he starts to wonder whether his future might still hold something worth fighting for.

Whitney took a job with a small town sheriff's department hoping for quiet, a place to recover from things she has barely survived. The position seemed to offer exactly that until a killing at the local rodeo landed the case on her desk. She has to find the killer, and she cannot afford distractions or trust, not even toward Mark, whose wounded spirit seems to speak to something in her own.

Their growing feelings for each other could turn out to be the best thing that has happened to either of them. But the killer tracking their every step may have other plans, and they might never get the chance to see where their connection leads.
