Repeat after Me
About This Book
Kathy Ackerman's collection finds a good deal that matters in the everyday life of a household. Her poems shift between tenderness and humor, sometimes with a sly edge, and they take up subjects as varied as wildfires, snakes, mammograms, organ donation, honeysuckle, and the enduring pull of love. Across these pages, the poet considers love alongside its losses and the fear of losing what we hold, as well as grief, regret, and the way priorities change over time, so that some things become essential and others fall away. Her ordinary days are the kind we all have to work our way through, yet looking back on them can bring a sudden clarity. The poems are meant to be reread, and each return may reveal something new about the reader. Kathy Ackerman serves as an administrator and Writer-in-Residence at Isothermal Community College in Spindale, North Carolina, where she works to improve lives through learning. She lives on a loblolly farm that is still a work in progress, on the edge of Polk County. Her 2019 poetry collection, A Quarrel of Atoms, was a finalist in several contests and won the Lena Shull Book Award from the North Carolina Poetry Society. Her other books include Coal River Road, The Heart of Revolution, and three poetry chapbooks.
