Revival

The author's motivation for this work grew out of a vague unease with the leading logic textbooks. Those volumes claimed to set out the rules that govern correct reasoning, yet they never clearly explained what the reasoning faculty actually is. The author judged John Stuart Mill's treatise the best of them, but still found it unconvincing. The more of these books he read, the less satisfied he became, and his determination to grasp what reasoning really consists of only strengthened. He was also surprised to find that psychologists either left reasoning out entirely or touched on it only superficially.
