About this book
Rita Robillard, born in 1944, is an American mixed media artist based in Portland, Oregon. Her work engages with history, the natural world, ecology, and the idea of place. Best known for her prolific printmaking and painting, she keeps testing what the print medium can do. She grew up and was schooled in New York City, studied at Cooper Union in the early 1960s, spent the early 1970s living and working in Brazil, and earned her BA and MFA at the University of California, Berkeley in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She later taught at Washington State University in Pullman and at Portland State University.
In every place she has lived, Robillard's art has amounted to a sustained reflection on time and place. This book brings together four contemporary art writers to examine her life and work. Art writer Bean Gilsdorf offers a wide-ranging survey of her career. Frances DeVuono, a friend of Robillard's for many years, contributes a detailed interview with the artist.
Patricia Grieve Watkinson, formerly director of the Museum of Art at Washington State University in Pullman, writes about the Pullman years. Linda Tesner, formerly director of the Hoffman Gallery at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, writes about the Portland years.
The volume also includes an extensive biography of the artist and more than 60 color illustrations.
