Room Between Us

Room Between Us is Denise Saul's debut poetry collection. It explores family and identity through the story of a mother who falls ill and develops aphasia, and of her daughter, who becomes her ongoing carer.

At the center of their relationship is the recognition that language falls short when it comes to naming painful experiences. Together, mother and daughter begin to know the world afresh. The poems leave space for both the extraordinary and the ordinary, balancing everything that lies between them.

That sense of betweenness also opens a way into wider questions of power, and into the epiphanies and aftershocks that come with continuing loss.
